Ian Fancey

Born: 1940

Ian Fancey. Sculptor. Springhill (originally Pugwash), Nova Scotia. Active from 1994.

Ian Fancy carves his impressions of the world in Eastern White Pine and adds color; brilliant Maritime primary color. He plays with words and uses that play in his work. He has given a whole new look to the simple phrase: “A School of Fish”. (It was a carving of a dozen young Catfish at their desks with a large Catfish teacher pointing to words on the Blackboard.) Mr. Fancey’s work appears in Public and private collections around the world.

Percy Helm

Born: 1907 | Died: 1996

Percy Helm. Painter. Sculptor. Tidnish Bridge, Nova Scotia. Active late 1970’s- 1990’s.

A naive painter and a sculptor of primitive works. Especially Birds. Percy Helm worked with ‘as found’ materials and colours.

Found in Nova Scotia; an oil painting of seven ducks, all different species of the area. It is painted on a section of a 1960’s era hollow door. Marked on the reverse: Ex. collection Ellen Holden, Amherst, Nova Scotia. 1970’s. Percy Helm also was a bird carver.

Wes Weagle

Born: Active 1950's.

Wes Weagle. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Colchester, Nova Scotia. Active in the 1950’s.

Wes Weagle was a figurative carver. He made strongly impressionistic carvings of people and characters. Shown below is a mounted policeman on horseback by Wes Weagle. It is carved and painted in ‘as found’ colours and is signed on the base. (From a private collection.)

A well-known artist. Especially in the earlier days when Outsider artists and Folk artists were not recognized as such. Sculptors and painters, except for those few who were known in their time, did not sign their work. Some, like Damase Richard, became well known later in life and had carvings brought back to be identified and signed by him.

Unsigned primitive oil on canvas. Quebec. (C.1900-1925) Found at Quebec: An oil painting on canvas of the farms along the St. Lawrence in Charlevoix. (About 15 by 27 inches. 1900-1925.) It has been attributed( by one source) to Aristide Gagnon of the Quebec City area. A very powerful and dramatic painting. (Now in a private collection.) Here is the image:

Charlie Poirier

Born: Active late 20th century.

Charlie Poirier. Sculptor. Wood carver. Cheticamp, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Active late 20th century.

Charlie Poirier makes carvings of birds and, occasionally, people in situations. Especially Cape Breton islanders busy in their lives. His bird carvings include what he calls ‘flows’; where he will mount a number of birds of the same colours perched on ‘as found’ drift wood branches in ways that are extremely graceful and full of movement , energy and humour. He says that these are his favorite things to create. Some examples are shown below. He carves in Pine and always paints in bright primary colours.
