Sister Ann Ameen

Born: 1908  |  Died: 1996

Sister Ann Ameen. Fabric artist. Rug Hooker. Shearstown, Newfoundland. Active Mid to late 20th century.

Sister Ann Ameen made hooked rugs as a fund raiser and also as a way to spread her faith. Sister Ameen was originally a ‘showgirl’ who, after surviving cancer, returned to her native Newfoundland and opened a mission to work with troubled young women.  I am giving a reference here to an article on Ann Ameen and the art of rug hooking. Very much worth a read. Ref:https://ornamentum.ca/textile-artists-embrace-a-cultural-icon/

Many of her hooked rugs showed religious characters and sayings. She worked up to the end of her life and became very well known. An example is shown below.

I have given two other references below. The second one is an excellent and well illustrated article on the Rug Hooking Guild of Newfoundland.
