Mathilde and Therese Laliberte. Sculptors. Woodcarvers. Saint-Isadore, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.

Mathilde Laliberte with her sister Therese Laliberte (b. 1921) made painted panels and cut out figures for their yard. They used ‘as found’ materials from plywood to plastic bottle whirligigs. Therese made a bird in profile using cut strips of tin. They were first mentioned in Les Patenteux du Quebec.

Mme Paul Labrie. Sculptor. Painter. Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.

Mme Labrie was a painter and sculptor. She filled her yard with murals of people in every day occupations and at play.  She painted them on plywood panels and cut them out in relief. “I make reality….to make the old ways as they were.” She coloured using oil-based house paints. Mme Labrie also made drawings using pencil and crayon. She was first mentioned in Les Patenteux du Quebec.

Maurice Joncas. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Pointe-Jaune, Gaspe, Quebec. Active late 20th century.

Multi-talented in his career and a self-taught woodcarver, Maurice Joncas makes elegant carvings of birds with ‘as found’ driftwood found on the shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He doesn’t cpaint his work nor does he sign them.

Henri-Louis Jacob. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Vallee-Jonction, Quebec. Active late 20th century- .

Henri-Louis Jacob lives in Quebec City where he carves birds; mostly wild birds and sometimes roosters. He paints his work and usually signs and dates them. Henri-Louis Jacob has been known to work in stone.

Marius Harton. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Saint-Andre-de-Kamouraska, Quebec. Active late 20th century-.

Marius Harton makes carvings using ‘as found’ driftwood gathered along the shores of the lower St. Lawrence. He makes shorebirds and other waterfowl carvings as well as model boats. The bird carvings are generally varnished and the model boats are colored (his spouse Manon helps in colouring). He signs his work.
