Artheme Saint-Germain

Artheme Saint-Germain. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Thurso, Quebec. Active mid-20th century.

Artheme Saint-Germain us ‘as found’ object and materials to create birds and bird houses for his yard. He has been collected by the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Jean-Marc Poirier

Born: 1949

Jean-Marc Poirier. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec. Active mid 1990’s – .

Jean-Marc Poirier was born on les Iles-de-la-Madeleine. He moved to Cape-Breton Island around 1990 to fish lobster and cod. It was there in Cheticamp, Cape-Breton that he began making sculptures in wood and opened a studio/gallery. He made animals and birds and people. His colour palette was bright Maritime primary colours. Jean-Marc Poirier’s inspiration was the sea and the land and he often used ‘as found’ driftwood in his work. He signed his carving ‘J. M. Poirier’ always on the base in script. He stopped carving around 2010 and moved back to his native Iles-de-la-Madeleine where he has resumed carving.

Pascal Riopel

Born: 1985

Pascal Riopel. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Perce, Gaspe, Quebec. Active 2010 -.

Pascal Riopel began carving when he was twenty-five, after a serious illness. He lives in Perce village where he has a workshop and gallery. He makes painted carvings of people and occasionally birds and animals. He signs and dates his work.

Andre Parrot

Born: 1897  |  Died: 1974

Andre Parrot. Sculptor. Metal Smith. Ange-Gardien, Quebec. Active first half 20th century.

Andre Parrot was a metal smith in iron, tin and copper. He is best known for an Angel blowing a Trumpet in hammered copper which is in the Canadian Museum of Civilization and was the gift of Nettie Sharpe.

Robert Paradis

Born: 1917  |  Died: 2007

Robert Paradis. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Frampton, Quebec. Active second half 20th century.

Robert Paradis made carvings of people, often in groups in social and work situations. His carvings were naive, detailed and finely coloured. His sculptures were always painted in bright, glossy by his spouse Angelina Turgeon  (1923-2005) and her colour work added a significant dimension to the carvings.
