Lorraine Thibault

Lorraine Thibault. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec. Active mid-20th century.

The mark “LorraineThibault. Carver” is very occasionally seen on painted carvings of birds with wire feet and mounted on unpainted wood bases. It is possible that there is a family connection to Adelbert Thibault.

Andre Laporte

Born: 1949

Andre Laporte. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Napierville, Quebec. Active 1970’s – .

Born in Verdun, Andre Laporte lives in Saint-Pierre-de-Napierville. Andre is known for his colourful primitive woodcarvings of Hockey players – especially the Toronto Maple Leafs. His work is painted and usually, but not always, signed.

A good friend of Leo Fournier and his son Denis, Andre Laporte made a carving of Leo Fournier. It is certainly one of his most expressive and powerful carvings. It is shown below. (From the collection of the late Mark Zannis.)

Michel Mandron

Born: 1920  |  Died: 2015

Michel Mandron. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Model maker. Montreal, Laval, Quebec. Active late 20th century.

Michel Mandron was born in Paris and moved to Quebec (Laval) in the 1960’s. He is known for building a collection of scale model airplanes – beginning from the start of air-travel to the present day airliners. His models were built from scratch by hand and painted in every detail. The early canvas and wood bi-planes were built and painted in the same manner as were the original early 20th century planes were. He also made fantasy models from Literary classics.  His work is stunning and quite overwhelming. Michel Mandron’s attention to detail is as fine as his carving abilities.

Shown below at the link is a flickr set of images of his collection by Serge Leonard of Oka, Quebec:

Joachim Coulombe

Born: 1917  |  Died: 2002

Joachim Coulombe. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Saint-Tharcisius, Matapedia, Quebec. Active late 20th century.

Joachim Coulombe carved both the wild and domestic animals of Quebec. His carvings were naive and extremely charming and he often anthropomorphize them.  They were always painted but never, as far as I know, signed. Joachim Coulombe’s works were done in Pine wood and he used ‘as found’ colours in painting them; sometimes a glossy oil colour and sometimes a flat water colour. All the details were carved. An example of a farm horse is shown below.

Albert Saint-Laurent

Born: Active mid 20th century.

Albert Saint-Laurent. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Matane, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.

Albert Saint-Laurent was know for his carvings of birds with movable wings. His carvings were made in various woods usually signed and unpainted – simply varnished. He was first mentioned in the 1972 publication: Le Guide des Artisans Createurs du Quebec (pg. 227 and on the cover) *

His birds are similar to those of Valmont Belanger, another artist from Matane, Quebec (active 1980’s-90’s) except that Valmont Belanger’s birds were always painted – often with polka-dots. (See the article on Belanger. http://lyleelderfolkart.com/artist-bios/valmont-belanger/)
