Euclide Deschene

Born: 1908

Euclide Deschene. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Cap-a-L’Aigle, Cte Charlevoix, Quebec. Active 1960’s – .

Euclide Deschene was a ship’s captain for the Canada Steamship Line’s run between Montreal and Chicoutimi. In his spare time in the 1960’s and full time after his retirement in the 1970’s he made woodcarvings; carving animals in the round and in relief carvings as well as people at work and playing – from musicians to fishermen. He also made decorated furniture. His work was usually stained or left natural. His initials: ‘E.D.’ were his usual mark.

Therese Champagne-Descoteaux

Born: 1923

Therese Champagne-Descoteaux. Sculptor. Saint-Mathieux, Cte Saint-Maurice, Quebec. Active 1960 – .

Therese Champagne-Descoteaux was a sculptor in plaster and cement. She worked these materials by hand sculpting Religious figures and animals and painting them.

Agathe Boucher-Dubreuil

Born: 1918

Agathe Boucher-Dubreuil. Fabric artist. Dollmaker. Vallee-Jonction, Quebec. Active 1973 – .

Agathe Boucher-Dubreuil using a wide range of materials made dolls performing every kind of task and trade in Quebec. Harvesting, bread-making, sawing wood – all were  her subject matter. She made and dressed them. Using old photographs and archives she made Tramps, The ‘Grande Dame as well as characters from history. She mounted her dolls on a wooden base and usually signed her work: Agathe Dubreuil.

Juliette Bergeron

Born: c.1935

Juliette Bergeron. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Louiseville, Maskinonge, Quebec. Active 1970’s – .

Juliette Bergeron sculpted relief carvings in wood and also occasionally in plaster or cement. Most of her relief carvings were in Pine and usually traditional scenes of work in the fields or at home around the table. She also made sculpted ‘bas reliefs’ of religious themes. She was known for a pair of life-like painted busts of her parents made of plaster covered paper.

Arthur Bellemare

Born: 1906

Arthur Bellemare. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Model maker. Saint-Gregoire, Cte Nicolet, Quebec. Active 1970’s -.

Arthur was a maker of miniature horse drawn vehicles. Vehicles, carriages and wagons of every kind. He preferred that all of his miniature model had moving parts – springs that worked leather upholstery, wheels that turned etc. He used ‘as found’ materials to achieve this. From metal to string to varnished leather. His models were also coloured. Bellemare also carved jewelry in peach stones. He made his models for his own pleasure and rarely sold them.
