Imelda George

Imelda George. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Writer. Arichat, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Active late 20th century- .

Imelda George makes painted carvings of Angels, Santas and even a ‘Bird House’ chair. She is the author of a children’s book: “The House of Wooden Santas” which she illustrated with her carvings.

Sumner Foster

Born: Active early 20th century.

Sumner Foster. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Port George, Nova Scotia. Active early 20th century.

Sumner Foster was known as a carver of painted primitive works in paint; including a carving of a man on a horse drawn wagon. He was cited in Elwood’s book on Nova Scotia Folk Art.

Larry Fancy

Born: 1951

Larry Fancy. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Milton, Nova Scotia. Active 1980’s – .

Larry Fancy carves people in all sizes and shapes as well as  animals and birds. Always in paint and he signs his work.

Larry Fancy’s influences were  watching his father, Raymond Fancy and their  neighbour Ralph Boutilier make art. They inspired him to make his own. He uses bright primary colours.

Raymond Fancy

Born: 1910  |  Died: 1988

Raymond Fancy. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Milton, Nova Scotia. Active 1970’s – .

Raymond Fancy was influenced to begin carving by his friend and neighbour, Ralph Boutilier. He made primitive works of people in their trades as well as birds and small animals. He painted his works. Raymond Fancy’s works were very honest,  direct and showed power. Unfortunately he did not  have a large body of work due to poor health. (His son is Larry Fancy who also became an artist under the influence of father and of Boutilier.)

Lillian Ellis

Lillian Ellis. Fabric artist. Quilt maker. Darling Lake, Nova Scotia. Active early 20th century.

Lillian Ellis was a quilt make. She was cited in Field’s book: The Spirit of Nova Scotia*. (1985)
