George Markel.

Born: 1910  |  Died: 2006

George Markel. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Southey, Saskatchewan. Active 1980 – 2006.

George Markel farmed in rural Saskatchewan before moving to Regina to work. He retired and moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta where he began carving sculptures showing rural life on the farm. His favorite subjects were Horses and Pigs.

From a Bio by the Alberta Foundation for the arts:

“Markel’s whimsy and imagination also prompted him to create sculptures
with titles such as Sheeposaur in a body of work built from found materials such as jewelry,
fur, branches, buttons, beads, fabrics, and toys.

“Explaining how he came to be a folk artist, Markel wrote that one day around 1975, he was
shopping and saw a china horse sculpture with a harness on it. The price was over
$80—about $350 in 2016. “That was too much for me to pay,” he wrote. “Later on I saw a
horse just like the first one in a different store, but they had a Red River Cart with
the horse. So I asked him if he would sell them separately. He said he would. So I said,
‘O.K., I will buy the horse. I will try to make the cart.’ So, that’s the way I started
making carts and wagons, sleighs, and finally I started carving horse, cows, and bulls.”

“Markel participated in  exhibitions, including the Medicine Hat Exhibition
and Stampede Visual Arts Show, shows at Canadian Art Galleries in
Calgary, and Expo ’86. His works are in the collections of the Royal Alberta Museum, the
Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the Canadian Museum of History.”

Doug Purdy

Born: 1948  |  Died: 2018

Doug Purdy. Sculptor. Painter. Montreal, Quebec. Born in Pugwash, Nova Scotia. Active Late 20th c – .

Doug Purdy, known as ‘Bobby’ to his friends made carvings of Birds, animals and wild life. His carvings were distinctive, beautifully coloured and often mischievous; if the twinkle wasn’t in the eye of the carving he was making; it was in the eye of the artist. He painted  as a hobby most of his life, and displayed considerable skill but it wasn’t until after 1980 that he began to carve; making carved and painted figures of people, animals and birds. Some were fanciful Christmas ornaments, many others were every day people from Hockey Players to proud Fishermen. And they were caved in has manner and style and his colour pallet.

One of his finer achievements was perhaps the series of the ‘Legends of Quebec’ – ranging from the “Hobo” Chicken Charmer to the legendary Chasse – Gallerie,  iconic in Quebec and beautifully done. These legends were featured in a Museum Exhibit in Point a Calliere in Montreal.

To quote the artist: “My repertoire includes Noah’s Arks, complete with animals, Nativity scene’s, any and all animals, Santa riding elephant’s or sheep or whatever I fancy at the time.
I am more of a shaker folk artist than a naïve folk artist, – my works are not refined but
neither are they simple.

Lucien Bergeron

Born: 1927  |  Died: 2009

Lucien Bergeron. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Montreal, Quebec. Active late 20th C.

Lucien Bergeron was the son of Alphonse Bergeron. Like his father he carved the birds of Quebec as a hobby and most of his works were given to friends and family. He didn’t often sign his work and it can be difficult to tell the carvings of these two Quebec artists apart. His works were in paint ans some of his mounts were different than his father’s.

I am including information and works given by Robert Bergeron, the nephew of Alphonse Bergeron. In French and with great thanks.

Some Birds by Alphonse Bergeron:Robert Bergeron. Nephew of Alphonse Bergeron writes:
Avec un parti pris évident, mon sculpteur d’art populaire préféré est mon oncle Alphonse…
Alphonse Bergeron (1893-1979) Comme je prépare un petit recueil de ses œuvres, j’aimerais
bien si vous avez de celles-ci que vous m’en faisiez part…Je joins aussi des pièces de
son fils Lucien Bergeron (1927-2009) qui a adopté le passe-temps de son père à la retraite.
