Cecil Mason

Cecil Mason. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Active late 20th century.

Cecil Mason made painted carvings of people, usually in trades or famous. His carvings were meticulously done and well painted in high gloss colours.

C. E. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Eastern Ontario. Active late 20th century.

C. E. are the initials on a primitive painted woodcarving of a fiddle player. Other wood carvings with this mark are occasionally  found in Eastern Ontario.

Firmin Gallant

Born: Active since 1990.

Firmin Gallant. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Gaspe – Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec. Active since 1990.

Firmin Gallant works with driftwood and makes large life sized carvings of people and wild-life found along Quebec’s Gaspe shore. His work is often displayed at festivals and along the shore in out-door galleries at Mont-Saint-Anne, Quebec and other places.

This artist is a naive Quebec woodcarver working in the flat-plane tradition. Signed works are seen occasionally marked: “C. Bolduc”.  An example (from a popular auction site) is shown.

Berthier Beauregard

 

Berthier Beauregard. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Saint-jean-Port-Joli, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.

Berthier Beauregard made wood carvings in the flat-plane tradition of saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec. He learned carving in the studio of Gerard Fortin and later took over his studio. Beauregard’s son Mathieu now owns and maintains it and works as a cabinet maker.  Berthier Beauregard’s work was sometimes coloured, especially early in his career. His subject range was wide; he carved people, birds and animals. His work was signed with a chisel usually on the side of the base. Some examples of the range of this woodcarver are shown.
