Joe Lloyd was born near Napannee, Ontario and eventually settled in Brantford where he began carving seriously in the 1970’s. He is best known for his carvings of people at work and play; and in the situations that people get themselves into. He works in small scale and with great detail. (See The First Haircut” below.) His subjects range from animals to people and his work is always painted.

A primitive sculptor; he began carving after he retired. He made impressions of people, and animals and furniture.

Rosario Gauthier. Sculptor. Saint-Charles-le-Bourget, Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.
A true primitive artist, Rosario Gauthier used ‘as found’ materials and color in his carvings. He carved Birds and animals and people and he is collected in Museums and private collections; a large body of his work is in The Musee du Civilization a Quebec.

Joseph ‘Joe’ Winters. Sculptor. Painter. Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Active late 20th – century.
Began carving and painting while he was in the Canadian Navy. While he has made many larger pieces including Bears, Totem Poles and Cigar Store sculptures; he does smaller works now and has been collected throughout North America and in Europe. He is now partially retired; showing only at the Lunenburg Folk Art Festival.
