Agatha Mercier. Sculptor. Woodcarver. St-Jean-Port-Joil, Quebec. Active 1940’s.
Agatha Mercier was a flat-plane woodcarver. She made painted woodcarvings of Quebec figures wearing traditional costumes and in traditional occupations. She was active in the 1940’s and signed with an engraving tool. Her work was strong and well carved and painted. She seemed to have only been active in the late 1930’s and 1940’s. Her carvings were mainly sold to tourists and other travelers along the Gulf of St. Lawrence and small galleries. An example of her work and mark are shown below.
