A. Marais. Woodcarver. Sculptor. Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec. Active 1940’s.
This artist carved in the flat-plane tradition making painted carvings of Quebec figures in traditional costume and occupations. The mark can be found on the base of the carvings – usually a stamp – ‘A. Marais’ in red ink or occasionally in script. The figures were well-carved and painted. They dated from the 1930’s and into the early 1940’s. There is no record of this artist carving after that time and little else is known about him or her. The carvings were mainly sold to tourists and other travelers along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. An example is shown below with the mark.
