Louise Patenaude is a bird carver living South of Montreal. She carves from nature and her birds are very well coloured. Her birds are signed on the base.

Emile Mailloux

Emile Mailloux. Painter. Quebec. (Charlevoix County?) Active late 19th-early 20th century.

Emile Mailloux was the painter of a striking naive painting. An oil on canvas of a  winter scene with a sleigh in a village. Signed: “Emile Mailloux” and titled: “Ancien Quebec”. It was made with ‘as found’ materials and colours. (C1900)

Robert Toussaint

Born: 1941  |  Died: 2001

Robert Toussaint. Sculptor. Wood carver. Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Trois Saumons, Quebec. Active Mid to late 20th century.

Robert Toussaint carved and painted birds. Every kind of bird and waterfowl found in Quebec in different sizes. They were flat plane carvings and always well painted and detailed. Originally from Trois Saumons, Quebec, his wood carvings were made for the carving centre of Saint-jean-Port-Joli and were also found in Galleries throughout Quebec. He organized the Oisellerie Trois Saumons and all the birds carved there were stamped on the base with that mark (illustrated below).

Roland Villeneuve

Born: 1913  |  Died: 2002

Roland Villeneuve. Sculptor. Wood carver. Mirabel, (Laurentides) Quebec. Active mid to late 20th century.

Roland Villeneuve made nieve carvings, mostly of farm animals, and always well painted. He carved in Pine and sometimes used ‘as found’ materials for details (real hair for a horse’s tail for example). He lived and worked in the lower Laurentian mountains north of Montreal.

Yvon Mimeault

Born: 1928

Yvon Mimeault. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Mont-Louise, Quebec. Active mid to late 20th century.

A carver of painted wood carvings. Mainly animals, wild and domestic. While working as an electrician and living near Matane, Quebec with his family, Yvon Mimeault became an accomplished fiddle player and composer as well as a skilled sculptor and folk artist.
