Henri Aubut

Born: 1903

Henri Aubut. Sculptor. Wood carver. Saint-Clement, (Riviere-du-Loup), Quebec. Active 1968-1980’s.

Henri Aubut was a primitive artist; carving animals and horse-drawn machinery and equipment found on Quebec farms. His carvings were highly detailed and accurate. He often signed and dated his work.

Neree Allard

Born: 1888  |  Died: 1955

Neree Allard. Sculptor. Wood carver. St-Alexandre, Quebec. Active first half of the 20th century.

Neree Allard was known for his religious carvings. They included way-side crosses and other carvings made for church interiors in a number of parishes in Quebec’s Richelieu Valley area. He has been collected by the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull and the McCord museum in Montreal.

Roch Aubin

Born: 1896  |  Died: 1974

Roch Aubin. Sculptor. Wood carver. New Carlisle, Quebec. Active mid-20th century.

After working for many years in Montreal he moved to New Carlisle on the Baie-des-Chaleures on the Gaspe shore where his wife was born. He began making sculptures and installations, with the help of his wife, in his yard from ‘as found’ materials, especially driftwood, for his yard. His work was first recorded in the book: “Les Patenteux du Quebec” * in the 1970’s. There are images in this book of his work.

Antoine Bouchard

Antoine Bouchard. Painter. Chicoutimi, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.

Antoine Bouchard is known for painting charming and colorful scenes of life at home in rural Quebec. Shown below is an example of a painting of the family around the kitchen. It is signed in the lower right and dates from the 1950’s or 1960’s.

Leblanc, ?

Born: 1914

Oniseme Leblanc.  Sculptor. Wood carver. Point-aux-Loups, Gaspe, Quebec. Active mid to late 20th century.

Oniseme Leblanc is a bird carver. A carver of ducks and the birds of Quebec. He usually colours his work and signs on the base: “Leblanc” and often dated. Examples of his work are shown below.
