A. M.

Born: Active mid 20th century.

A. M. Sculptor. Wood carver. Quebec. (Exact location unknown.) Active mid 20th century.

A. M. is the mark found on a signed and dated carving of a stick dancer. The carving was found in the Montreal area of Quebec and is signed ‘A. M.’ on the reverse and dated ’46. The dancer is mounted on a stand made for it and painted in ‘as found’ colours; probably glossy house paint. It measures about 12 inches high.

The stick dancer was a popular toy (in some cases almost a musical instrument) in 19th and early 20th century Quebec. It was also a popular theme for the earlier folk artists. Finding a signed one is rare; even only an initialed one. Often used to entertain children; it is a sight to see one made to dance by an expert. (Some pictures are shown below.)

J. Hamelin. Sculptor. Wood carver. Montreal, Quebec. Active mid to late 20th century.

J. Hamelin is known for his relief carvings. His mark seen here on a painted relief carving of a Sugar Camp dating from the 1970’s. His carvings are often found in the Montreal area. His work is delicate and  Hamelin often carved the frame into the Relief.  Hamelin  carved  traditional Quebec scenes and portraits; colouring parts of the reliefs to show and accent the details. (See image below.)
