Mme Alphonse Durette

Mme Alphonse Durette. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Saint-Ulric, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.

Mme Durette was a naive sculptor of flowers, birds, ships and people; as well as yard art in ‘as found’ materials and colours. She was first mentioned in Les Patenteux du Quebec.

Pierre-Paul Dumas

Born: 1892

Pierre-Paul Dumas. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Belcourt, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.

Pierre-Paul Dumas made naive carvings in wood of people, animals, birds, weather vanes and models of ships. He also made carvings for his yard.

He was first mentioned in Les Patenteux du Quebec.

Florida Gelinas

Born: 1900

Florida Gelinas. Sculptor. Saint-Mathieu, Quebec. Active mid-20th century.

Florida Gelinas assembled and painted miniature houses and churches for her backyard. She was first mentioned in Les Patenteux du Quebec.

Clement Fournier

Born: 1924  |  Died: 2010

Clement Fournier. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Saint-Sophie-de-Levrard, Quebec. Active late 20th century.

Clement Fournier made carvings that “ re-created daily rural life in the early 20th century, an era not so distant, when the activities of man and horse were intimately linked”. His carvings were of farm implements; ploughs and wagons, everything that was horse-drawn as well as scenes from daily life. His carvings were rarely painted and only occasionally signed. Some fifty of his works are on permanent display in the Church at Saint-Sophie-de-Levrard.

Arthur Fournier

Born: 1834

Arthur Fournier. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec. Active late 19th century.

Arthur Fournier was a ‘self-taught’ woodcarver in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli. He was considered an influence on the work of the 20th century artists from the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli area.
