Giusppina Mancini

Giusppina Mancini. Painter. Quebec. Active.

Giusppina Mancini arrived in Canada at a very young age. Now in her 80’s, she is displaying a wonderful naïve talent as a painter. Found on Facebook, I have no other information on this artist as yet. A very fine example of her work is shown below.

Doug Purdy

Born: 1948  |  Died: 2018

Doug Purdy. Sculptor. Painter. Montreal, Quebec. Born in Pugwash, Nova Scotia. Active Late 20th c – .

Doug Purdy, known as ‘Bobby’ to his friends made carvings of Birds, animals and wild life. His carvings were distinctive, beautifully coloured and often mischievous; if the twinkle wasn’t in the eye of the carving he was making; it was in the eye of the artist. He painted  as a hobby most of his life, and displayed considerable skill but it wasn’t until after 1980 that he began to carve; making carved and painted figures of people, animals and birds. Some were fanciful Christmas ornaments, many others were every day people from Hockey Players to proud Fishermen. And they were caved in has manner and style and his colour pallet.

One of his finer achievements was perhaps the series of the ‘Legends of Quebec’ – ranging from the “Hobo” Chicken Charmer to the legendary Chasse – Gallerie,  iconic in Quebec and beautifully done. These legends were featured in a Museum Exhibit in Point a Calliere in Montreal.

To quote the artist: “My repertoire includes Noah’s Arks, complete with animals, Nativity scene’s, any and all animals, Santa riding elephant’s or sheep or whatever I fancy at the time.
I am more of a shaker folk artist than a naïve folk artist, – my works are not refined but
neither are they simple.
