Charles Edenshaw

Charles Edenshaw. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia. Active late 19th – early 20th century.

Charles (Charlie) Edenshaw was a Haida Chief. His art was based on Haida traditions and stories. He worked with different media in his sculpture; gold, silver, argillite, ivory and wood are some. He made decorated totems, boxes and other traditional works. Marius Barbeau recounts his life* and he is cited by many galleries and museums.

George De Pape

George De Pape. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Homby Island, British Columbia. Active mid 20th century.

George De Pape was a sculptor. He made naive and primitive sculptures and assemblies in ‘as found’ materials and colours including metal, stone, concrete, wood. Many of his works were for his yard. He was cited in Kobayashi (1985) and the Canadian Centre for Folklore Studies.

Joseph (Joe) David

Born: 1946

Joseph David. Painter. Sculptor. Printmaker. British Columbia. Active late 20th century.

Joe David, a member of the Clayoquot Clan on B. C.’s Northwest Coast First Nations people. He carves masks and is a print-maker. He is collected by the National Gallery of Canada.

Fred Alexie

Born: 1853  |  Died: 1939

Fred Alexie. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Painter. Port Simpson, Brithish Columbia. Active late 19th – early 20th century.

Fred Alexie made naive paintings in watercolours of the Skeena River area. He also made spirit carvings for the Tsimshian secret society rites.

Ethel Leather was a naive painter.
