An amazing Wirligig by Albert Deroy of Price, Quebec. A rare and remarkable work. The trotting horse is of heavy gauge galvanized steel and it really moves in the wind. In bright and all original colors. It was made about 1960 and the post is 43″ long. The vane and whirligig is about 24″ high by 29″ long. Edmond-Joseph Massicotte

Edmond Massicotte (1875-1929) was an engraver and an illustrator. His most important contribution were the studies and illustrations he made of Quebec folklore as well as  of the old  traditions and celebrations. First published under the title “Nos Canadiens D’autrefois” in 1923, it contained the first twelve plates that illustrated these old traditions. Included were commentaries by the ethnologist Marius Barbeau and others. More illustration of different traditions were added to further editions. One was published posthumously.

Rosaire Laplante

Rosaire Laplante. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Sherbrooke, Quebec. Active late 20th century.

Rosaire Laplante was a naive artist, a sculptor of animals and people doing unusual things in ‘every day situations. Mr. Laplante had a remarkable sense of humor that made  his later work stand out. His work is painted in bright strong primary colors and is usually highly varnished.

Shown here is an early work with the initials R. L. underneath:

‘Bill’ William Kerr

Bill Kerr. Sculptor. Kingston. Ontario. Active mid-20th century. William Kerr was a primitive sculptor of people, especially ‘characters’;  from life, comic strips and situations. And even of himself as ‘the wood carver’. Many of his works were stained and varnished and some were painted in strong and bright ‘as found’ colors; usually a high gloss oil-based house paint. His work was powerful and could be very tongue in cheek at times. His work was never sold during his life time. He died at the turn of the century (1999).

Shown is the Billboard Carving with his sign:
