Featured Works of Aurore Benoit

Aurore Benoit. St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. Active 1930’s – 1960.

An exceptional ornamental hooked mat or rug. Signed in the lower right hand corner by the artist. The best known of “les fermieres” who worked in this medium and the first to sign all of her work. She began working in the early 1930’s and was first published in the Gauvreau book (Les Artisans du Quebec) in 1940. This is a rare studio size in Aurore Benoit’s own frame. She preferred simple Pine or Basswood frames; sometimes varnished but often simply waxed.

Silk and Cotton on burlap. In the artist’s original frame. Sight size: 11″½H x 17½”W. And 16½”H x 22½”W over-all.                                               SOLD
