Emile Bluteau

Emile Bluteau. Sculptor. Quebec. Head of a Montaignais. Carved into a round piece of Birch Wood tree trunk.

Mr. Bluteau told me that he chose a well dried piece of White Birch stove wood for his first try at wood carving. He finished the piece after some months and he never carved  hardwood again. This is the work.

It is Emile Bluteau’s first sculpture. The head of a Montaignais Indian. Carved in a single block of White Birch wood. Made in the mid-1970’s over a period of some months. It is about 14 inches long and 6 inches in diameter.

A work of great power by one of Quebec’s finest primitive artists.
