Phillip Renaud. Sculptor. Wood carver. Oshawa, Ontario. Active late 20th century.
Phillip Renaud worked in the flat plane tradition and carved people and their situations, real and imaginary. He was known for carving series of works, always of people; Tramps and Hobos, Woodland people and characters among others. His carvings were wonderfully done and full of expression. His work was done in Basswood and always highly detailed and very well painted. He signed on the base with a chisel; usually the initials ‘P J R’ and often in the form of a monogram or symbol and sometimes with a date. (See photos below.) Phillp Renaud was an exceptional artist; in his carving and his colour work. His carvings have been widely collected; privately and in museums.
