Frank Nicholson

Frank Nicholson. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. 1888 – 1984.

Frank Nicholson made naïve carvings of birds. His birds are evocative and strongly painted in ‘as found’ colors. He was active in the 1960’s and 1970’s and usually signed his work. Two examples of his carvings are shown here. Frank Nicholson’s work has been exhibited and collected by the Canadian Museum of History in Hull, Quebec.

Ghislaine Fortin

Born: Active mid 20th century.

Ghislaine Fortin. Sculptor. Flat-plane woodcarver. Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec. Active 1960’s – 1970’s.

Ghislaine Fortin was a flat-plane carver and a maker of carved and  painted Quebec couples in original costumes of the times. They were usually signed on the base of the carvings as shown. It should be noted that there were other Fortin artists doing flat-plane work. Their work was sold in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli and elsewhere in Quebec. We haven’t established the family connections as yet.

Ed Viger

Born: Active 1950's -

Ed Viger. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Ile-Perot, Quebec. Active mid to later 20th c. .

Ed Viger is known for his decoys and his very fine ornamental Bird carvings. An ornamental carving – seen on Face Book – is shown here. It is signed on the base. **

Donald Boutin. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Levis, Quebec. Active late 20th C – .

D. Boutin’s mark is found on fine and delicate painted carvings of animals – farm and wild animals. The artist signs his work – either in full or with initials. Some examples of the artist’s work are shown here as well as the mark.

Joseph Huard

Born: Active mid 20th century.

Joseph Huard. Sculptor. Woodcarver. L’Anse-aux-Gascons, Quebec. Active mid 20th Century.

Joseph Huard made models of the fishing and cargo boats that sailed and worked up and down the St.-Lawrence and Gaspe shores. Joseph Huard’s model boats are found painted and unpainted and in different sizes – some up to three feet long and with fishing and sailing gear. His carvings were rarely signed.*

*As many as three generations of the Huard family were known to have made these model boats – from table top sizes to one three and four feet long; complete with fishing and sailing  gear.
