Herve Pepin makes carvings of birds mainly. He carves with a pocket knife and his carvings are painted by his spouse. He work is usually signed.

Robert Morency

Born: 1931  |  Died: 2021

Robert Morency. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Saint-Jean-de-Dieu, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.

Robert Morency was a primitive artist who made woodcarvings that are striking expressions. Using ‘as found’ materials, and his imagination, he made sculptures of barnyard birds and animals that are full of visual impact.  His Birds were very popular and he signed his carvings.

Guy Montembeault

Born: 1955

Guy Montembeault. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Drummondville, Quebec. Active late 20th century – .

Guy Montembeault makes miniature carvings of people, animals and social situations. Highly detailed in spite of their size; his carvings tell a story. Guy Montembeault uses humour and irony  in his work and his carvings are filled with humour and  colour. He signs his work with the date and numbers them. Guy Montembeault is collected by both museums and private collectors and he shows his work at the Saint-Ulric Festival of Folk Art Sculpture, as well as other exhibitions around Quebec.

Valere Marquis

Born: 1929

Valere Marquis. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Marieville, Quebec. Active 1970- .

Valere Marquis made carvings of people. He also made exquisite carvings of horses and their riders and he paid particular attention to the horses; they are always elegant and imaginative, beautifully carved and finely painted. He carved people at their occupations and at play. He sometimes signed his work, especially his later carvings, and very occasionally dated them. A fine example of his work is shown below. Valere Marquis was originally from Saint-Louis-du-Ha Ha!, Quebec.

Ernest Levesque

Born: 1938  |  Died: 2003

Ernest Levesque. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Pierreville, Quebec. Active Late 20th century.

To celebrate the millennium Ernest Levesque created a series of life-sized carvings of people associated with his own personal history. He made these carvings with ‘as found’ materials, notably roots and branches of trees that he gathered, assembled, carved and painted. These ‘people (“gens de son pays”) were well carved and coloured and full of humour. A number of them have been collected and are in la Musee quebecois de culture populaire de Trois-Rivieres.
