Edward Hagell

Edward F. Hagell. Painter. Lethbridge, Alberta. Active early 20th century.

Edward Hagell was a painter of naive works in oil. He painted, as a record, his memories of the early settlers and ranchers in Alberta. Hagell also made drawings in pencil and ink on paper. He is cited in Render, 1970.*

“His subjects were a personal attempt to document and preserve the early west prior to the impact of settlement.” (From the Galt Museum site in Lethbridge.)

Arthur Guindon

Born: 1864  |  Died: 1923

Arthur Guindon. Painter. Ethnologist. Montreal, Saint-Polycarpe, Quebec. Active late 19th – early 20th century.

Pierre Guindon made naive/surrealistic paintings of the folk-lore and traditions of the First Nations people of the Lac-des-Deux-Montagnes region of Quebec and also of Quebec legends and early popular culture. Guindon was a self-taught artist who worked in a variety of media: charcoal, pencil, gouache and oils. Some of his works are preserved at the Vieux Seminaire-de-Saint Sulpice in Montreal.

Alphonse Guindon

Alphonse Guindon. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Maxville, Ontario. Active 1960’s -.

Alphonse Guindon made scale models of buildings in the Maxville area as well as carvings of animals. He was the grandson of Arthur Sauve. Some of his models are in the Museum at Dunvegan, Ontario. He is known for his scale model of the Glengarry Pioneer Museum.
