Berthe Simard

Born: 1916

Berthe Simard. Painter. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Petite-Riviere-Saint-Francois, Charlevoix, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.

In the 1930’s Berthe Simard and her sister Marie-Anne were encouraged by Jori Smith and Jean Palardy to develop their talents and become artists. Berthe Simard was a painter  and also made painted wood carvings. Her colours were more subtle than her sister Marie-Anne’s but equally strong. Her subjects were the country-side and the sea.

Like Marie-Anne, her sister, she was among the Charlevoix artists featured in the book on Charlevoix painters: Peindre un Pays Where her story is told. She was also in the film: Paintres folklorique de Charlevoix,  ( ‘Folk Painters of Charlevoix’ ) made by Jean Palardy.

Daniel Pouliot

Daniel Pouliot. Sculptor. Woodcarver. St-Michel-de-Bellechasse, Quebec.  Active late 20th century – .

Daniel Pouliot is known for his very fine impressionist wood carvings using ‘as found materials. They are beautifully painted in ‘as found’ colours, and usually signed with his initials and the date.

C. Jean

Born: Active mid 20th century.

C. Jean. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Quebec City. QC. Active 1950’s – 1960’s.

C. Jean was a flat-plane woodcarver. He made small unpainted carvings of birds and wild-life usually signed.

Diane Cote

Born: Active 2oth century.

Diane Cote. Sculptor. Kamouraska, Quebec. Active 2oth century.

Diane Cote made sculptures of people using the crotches of small trees or branches. In the manner of Nova Scotia sculptor Stanley Rector. They were painted.

Guy Boudreau

Born: Active 20th century.

Guy Boudreau. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Mauricie, Quebec. Active 20th century.

Guy Boudreau made naïve painted figural carvings. He signed his work. An example is shown here.
