Dave Wilson. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Painter. Goderich, Ontario. Active mid-20th century.

Dave Wilson was  a carver of Birds. They were  well carved with energy and movement and finished with ‘as found’ colors. His carvings were usually signed on the base: Dave Wilson with the name of the species and the town Goderich,Ont. He also signed ‘D. W. Wilson’.

Ernest Muise

Born: 1928  |  Died: 1996

Ernest Muise. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Quebec City, Quebec. Active mid to late 20th century.

Ernest Muise was born in East Quinan, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia where he started carving as a child. He moved to Quebec City where he married (Quebecer, Rita Lemieux) and lived. His four children still live in the area. He carved most of his life. All manner of things with a great fondness for Birds. Always in paint and he always signed his work.

Stefane Bougie

Born: Active late 20th century.

Stefane Bougie. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Pointe-des-Cascades, Quebec. Active late 20th century.

A carver of birds; in particular painted life sized and miniature decorative carvings of waterfowl. His birds were realistic and lifelike. An example dated 1983 is shown here with the mark.

Clemence Lessard

Born: 1935

Clemence Lessard. Sculptor. Painter. Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce, Quebec. Active late 20th century.

Clemence Lessard was a sculptor primarily. She worked mostly in ‘as found’ materials carving figurative works such as masks and totems for her yard. She has been collected by The Museum of Canadian History.

Xavier Gauthier

Born: 1906   |  Died: 1994

Xavier Gauthier. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Chambord, Saguenay-lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. Active 1973 – 1990.

Xavier Gauthier was a  maker of models of horse drawn wagons and farm buildings using wood and metal. They were  made in great detail and true to scale. His works were often but hot always painted. He also made painted carvings of farm animals and tools.
