Charlie Tanner

Born: 1904  |  Died: 1982

Charlie Tanner. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Stonehurst, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. Active 3rd quarter 20th century.

A fisherman for most of his life, he became a folk artist in the 1970’s. He quickly became known for his wonderful carvings of people in all of life’s situations. He was first shown in the Houston North Gallery in Lunenburg and collected by Chris Huntington (1974). His carvings are very distinctive and well painted. His work is in many museum and private collections.

Harvey Caldwell

Harvey Caldwell. Sculptor. Woodcarver. West Arlington, Nova Scotia. Active late 20th century.

Harvey Caldwell was a well know wood carver in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. He was first collected by Chris Huntington who donated a work by Mr. Caldwell to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in 1994. (A carved and painted Leopard and a painted carving of an eagle and a rabbit; both dated 1989.)

Arthur Bennett

Born: Active mid 20th century.

From a carved and painted stage coach of wood,metal, horsehair and cotton (c.1950). In the collection of the Art Gallery of nova Scotia. No other information is available.

Helene Audet

Born: 1964

Helene Audet. Woodcarver. Saint-Hilarion, Charlevoix, Quebec. Active late 20th century.

Helene Audet is married to the artist Antoine Bouchard. While she has made and signed painted wood carvings (of fish and roosters) she is not an active woodcarver (see the post on Antoine Bouchard).

Stanislaus Aucoin

Stanislaus Aucoin. Sculptor. Decoy maker. Pointe-aux-Loups, Ile-de-la-Madelaine, Quebec. Active mid 20th century.

I have seen decoys attributed to this carver; but no signed pieces.
