Bill Male

Born: 1918  |  Died: 2003

Bill Male. Painter. Folk artist. Montreal, Quebec. Active second half of the  20th century.

Bill Male painted the world around him in bright primary colors. His paintings were usually full of people; often dancing or at play inside dance halls, restaurants and bars or outside in Apple orchards or farm fields. There was often music and often a solitary watcher. His work was primitive and powerful and skillful. He usually worked on masonite and artist board and signed his work  (“Male” and the date ) in one of the lower corners.

Bruno Desaulniers

Bruno Desaulniers. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Louiseville, Quebec. Active mid to late 2oth c.

Bruno Desaulniers was the fourth of six generations of wood carvers from the family.  They carved decoys and made ornamental carvings of ducks and geese.  Bruno Desaulniers and his son Claude both signed with their Initials carved on the bottom of their work.

Claude Desaulniers

Claude Desaulniers. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Louiseville, Quebec. Active last quarter 20th century.

   Claude Desaulniers operated “Artisinat Claude Desaulniers” and was from Louiseville Quebec.Six generations of the Desaulnier family have been involved in woodcarving; making mainly birds; ornamental ducks, geese and decoys. Claude Desaulniers was the fifth. They worked in pine and their carvings were well painted. Claude Desaulniers’ father, Bruno Desaulniers, also carved (4th). Their pieces were generally signed with initials: “C.D.” “B.D.” etc. (One of Claude Desaulniers Goose decoys was in the McCord Museum’s Exhibition: ‘Simply Montreal’ in 2009.)
