Jean Lelievre. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Quebec. QC. Active 1930’s – 1940’s.

Jean Lelievre was a flat-plane wood carver who was active in Quebec in the 1930’s and early 1940’s. He usually signed his work by hand in script – sometimes cursive and sometimes  printed – on the bottom of the base. He always painted his carvings. Lelievre’s subjects were always singles or couples in traditional Quebec costume. Larger works are rarely seen; most were between 4 ½ to 6 ½  inches high.*

*Jean Lelievre was one of several Quebec flat-plane woodcarvers whose carving careers seemed to have stopped sometime in the 1940’s or in a few cases the very early 1950’s. (The second world war may have been a factor for some.)
