Albert Demers

Born: 1910  |  Died: 1989

Albert Demers. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Laval, Quebec. B. L’ile-aux-Allumettes, Quebec.   Active mid 20th century.

Albert Demers was famous for his carved and painted animals of Quebec. His wood sculptures of moose and caribou are without equal. They were often carved in the round from a single block of wood (save for the antlers) with the bark left on. He had a very distinctive style and he sometimes did not sign his work. He made charming and gentle sculptures of animals in ‘situations’ and ‘in the wild’. M. Demers always carved in the round; a method that was very time consuming. Most of his work was stained and colored. His work is rare and much sought after. He usually signed in ink on the base.
